Compass Handling

I discovered that my base plate compass always points toward my cell phone - if they are
less than a foot apart. Does anybody else have any tips, tricks, caveats for compass
handling?

Hi NB
Most electronics can create an electronic field that will screw up a
compasses function. Cell Phones, Walky Talkies, etc. can affect
compasses. Try taking a compass reading standing next to a metal
light pole, and you will find that large metal objects also will
mess up the function of a compass.

Not to mention the metal in certain women's undergarments!

As well as power lines & car engines (ie for those times you try to
verify your letterbox clues' accuracy from behind the steering wheel-
-doesn't work all that well) ;)

Always keep your cellphone north of your compass and you'll have no
problems. It'll even slow the needle swinging faster.

I find that *any* large body, including my husband, can distort the
reading. Hold it away from your body...
